ELLWOOD CITY -- A farmers market that begins Saturday is Ellwood City's
own economic stimulus package, said Lenore Bazzichi, chairwoman of the
Ellwood City Revitalization committee.
The market, with at
least 14 local vendors, will run from 8a.m. to noon Saturday in the
municipal parking lot along Beaver Avenue between Fifth and Sixth
streets. Also featured at the event this week will be three bands
-- the Ellwood City Revitalized Brass Band from 8 to 9a.m.; the Play Mas
Steel Drum Band from Greenvile, Pa., from 9 to 11 a.m.; and the Lee
Caldwell Jazz Trio from 11 to noon.
Last Year, the market
was operated by the borough and featured a handful of vendors.
Wendy Barensfeld, chairwoman of the Ellwood City Farmers' Market
Committee, a subcommittee of the revitalization group, see this week's
farmers' market as a steppingstone to the market becoming a staple
downtown.
The farmers' markets
will continue each Saturday through the growing season, and Barensfeld
said she hopes that will be at least until the end of October. In
the future once a permanent structure is in place, the markets may take
place eight months out of the year, including offering harvest items
such as pumpkins, apples and cider in October and offering Christmas
tree and wreaths in November and December.
Most of the vendors
are from within a 30-mile radius of Ellwood City, said Bazzichi.
"The market is helping local farmers and providing them with a new
avenue to sell their goods," she said.
Also helping organize
the markets are Katie Longbrake, Cindy Morabito and Terri Stramba.
Work on expanding the open-air market began last winder, Barensfeld
said.
Gary Fox is chairman
of the stage committee along with Gary Jackson, Mike Poff, Lee Caldwell,
and Kristen Polomoscaik. Mr. Fox is taking an active role as a member of
the Ellwood City Revitalized Brass Band. Other members of the band
are Lee Caldwell, Mike Poff Sr., Mike Poff Jr., Gary Jackson and Julie
Mutmansky. The bands will perform in the parking lot while in the
future, the entertainment will be from a stage in the community plaza on
the opposite side of Beaver Avenue.
