Farmer’s market expands to include meats, crafts

ELLWOOD CITY – In the span
of only a few years, Ellwood City’s Farmer’s Market has gone from one
vendor to nearly a dozen vendors offering everything from organic meats
to Alpaca yarn.
“We’re very excited,” said Wendy Barensfeld, the chairperson of the
Farmer’s Market Committee for the Ellwood City Revitalization.
The newly expanded farmer’s market opens for the season on July 11 in
the borough municipal lot on Beaver Avenue. It will be held from 8 a.m.
to noon each Saturday.
The market has been in existence for years, but in recent years there
had only been one vendor selling cheese on a biweekly basis. Last year
the borough sought other vendors and fresh fruits, vegetables and plants
were sold.
This year, the choices are even greater with local farmers selling eggs,
grass-fed beef and lamb, pastured pork, homemade sausage, organic
chicken and turkey, herbs, flowers, fruit, cheese, vegetables, Alpaca
yarn and crafts.
Barensfeld said there will be live music weekly with the Ellwood City
Revitalization Band performing from 8 to 9 a.m. the first day followed
by a steel drum band from 9 to 11 a.m. and the Lee Caldwell Jazz Group
from 11 to noon. The John DiBuono Group will perform the second week.
New entertainers will be scheduled each week.
Barensfeld said this year’s farmer’s market is a true preview of the
plans for the area by the Ellwood City Revitalization committee.
ECR has proposed constructing a permanent farmer’s market structure in
the municipal parking lot off of Beaver Avenue to complement plans for
the Ellwood Community Plaza in a lot across the street that opens to
both Lawrence and Beaver avenues.
They intend to operate the farmer’s market on a nearly year round basis
once the structure is built and there will be a stage in the plaza for
entertainment.
Barensfeld said they expect to have nearly a dozen vendors when this
year’s farmer’s market kicks off next month.
She said they intend to open the farmer’s market earlier next year now
that they have vendors who can offer items that are not affected by the
vegetable and fruit growing seasons.
