Altmire secures $200,000 for Ellwood
City Revitalization

ELLWOOD CITY –
Ellwood City’s revitalization efforts got a big boost this week with the
promise of $200,000 in federal funding.
U.S. Congressman Jason Altmire (PA-04) announced that he has secured
$200,000 in federal funding to help Ellwood City Revitalization make
improvements to downtown. The funding Altmire secured will help to
create a new community plaza and a permanent space for a year-round
farmers’ market.
Altmire personally secured this funding for Ellwood City as part of the
FY 2010 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development Appropriations Act
(H.R. 2010), which has passed the house. This bill must still pass the
senate before the president can sign it into law.
“Local community leaders have developed a great vision for how we can
revitalize downtown Ellwood City and make this a more attractive area
for local residents and small businesses,” Altmire said. “I was glad
that I could secure federal funding that will help this project continue
moving forward. It is my hope that by revitalizing downtown, we can help
to spark new economic development and make this an even better area to
live and raise a family.”
In February, Ellwood City Revitalization unveiled plans for improvements
to downtown that include creating the Ellwood City Community Plaza,
which will run from Lawrence Avenue to Beaver Avenue. The plans also
include building an open-air building resembling an old train station to
house a year round farmers’ market. The funding Altmire secured will
help to cover the cost of preparing the properties for these new
buildings and making other streetscape and infrastructure improvements.
“I want to thank Congressman Altmire for securing funding that will help
us continue to make improvements to our city,” Lenore Bazzichi,
President of Ellwood City Revitalization, said. “We are undertaking an
ambitious project that will help to transform our downtown. It is
wonderful to see how so many different groups of people are coming
together to build a stronger future for our community.”
