Students who attended the Ellwood City Revitalization meeting on Tuesday, March 18th, were members of the American Studies II classes at Lincoln High School. The students are currently entertaining ideas for what is needed to reenergize the downtown area as well as help attract new residents to Ellwood. The students presented their Movie Maker slideshow to the committee and illustrated the need for a new school which can become the centerpiece of our community’s redevelopment. The Movie Maker presentation also outlined the need for more activities, shopping centers, and family style restaurants. The students also held a classroom debate over the value of a Walmart within the Ellwood City area. It was determined by the students that a Walmart would harm local businesses and drive out the over all community feeling.

This project was entirely student-driven and was organized and developed outside of class time. They held classroom debates, organizational meetings, and assigned research assignments on their own. After class, students stayed to discuss future ideas and check on the progress of their project. It was impressive to see the dedication and love displayed by the students for the future growth of their community.

As their teacher I was extremely proud of the intensity they displayed during this project. They organized, developed, and evaluated the entire project, even holding their own elections for officers and production committees. They have displayed remarkable leadership skills and have proven to be future leaders
of this community.
